Your Travel Guide to Thailand
All information & tips to prepare your trip in Thailand
Thailand is divided into 77 provinces, each with its own cultural, historical and natural riches. These provinces are spread across four main regions: the North, the Northeast (also known as Isan), the Central region and the South.
In the North, you'll find provinces such as Chiang Mai, famous for its laid-back atmosphere, ancient temples and lush mountain landscapes; Chiang Rai, known for the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand meet; and Sukhothai with its historical park, one of the most beautiful ancient sites in the country.
The Northeast, or Isan, is home to less touristy provinces such as Ubon Ratchathani, rich in traditions and cultural festivals, Khon Kaen and Udon Thani. Many of its provinces lie along the Mekong River, facing Laos.
The Central region is dominated by Bangkok, Thailand's vibrant capital, and surrounding provinces such as Ayutthaya, a former royal capital steeped in history, or Kanchanaburi, known for the Bridge on the River Kwai, its World War II sites and the Erawan waterfalls.
Southern Thailand is famous for its paradise islands and white sandy beaches with crystal-clear water – true postcard destinations that attract travelers from all over the world. The most popular include Phuket, Krabi and the islands of the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui), not forgetting the stunning Khao Sok National Park and its lake.
