Sakon Nakhon province is located in Isaan, in the northeast of Thailand. Foreign tourists go there very little, Thais more. For its ancient Buddhist temples, its historic sites and its unique traditions, notably its Christmas festival or the Wax Castle Festival at the end of Buddhist Lent. Sakon Nakhon is bordered by the provinces of Nakhon Phanom to the north, Mukdahan to the east, Udon Thani to the south and Nong Khai to the west. Its climate is similar to that of other provinces of Isan, with high temperatures and a rainy season from May to October.
Main attractions in Sakon Nakhon include Wat Phra That Choeng Chum, Nong Han Lake, the city museum and Phu Phan Historical Park. Visitors can also explore traditional craft villages, attend cultural festivals and explore the region's national parks.
The best time to visit Sakon Nakhon is during the dry season, from November to February but the nature and landscapes are most beautiful in the middle of the rainy season, from mid-June to mid-August.
As for cuisine, Sakon Nakhon is renowned for its beef cross between a Thai variety and French Charolais beef. There is a cooperative which has a store in Bangkok.
Located in Isan, Northeastern Thailand, Sakon Nakhon province is very little visited by foreign tourists. The city, formerly called Nong Han, was founded in the 11th century when the territory was under Khmer rule.
