The province of Phatthalung, in the south of Thailand, is a destination preserved from mass tourism. The fault perhaps lies with a Ministry of Foreign Affairs which persists in recommending against it on the France Diplomatie website. Personally, I fell in love with its landscapes, its lake, its artisans, its traditional art, Nang Talung, a shadow theater with a fascinating history.
The most famous and unmissable place in the province of Phatthalung is Thale Noï and Lake Songkhla, the largest freshwater lake in Thailand, with their fishermen's huts on pillotis, their diverse fauna, especially the birds, and its part covered with lotus, superb during the flowering period. At sunrise, the boat trip on the lake is simply magical! It's the absolute must-do here!
In the city, visitors can also explore ancient temples like Wat Khuha Sawan or climb the mountain that dominates the city behind its train station. In the province of Phatthalung, there are also caves, masters of Nang Talung and representations of this traditional art (only in Thai), interesting weekend markets.
Whether for a stroll on the lake, the discovery of local culture and arts or the exploration of nature, the province of Phatthalung offers a unique experience in the south of Thailand. The only problem is that it is still not recommended by the French authorities...
Phatthalung province is very little visited by foreign tourists. It can be explained by the fact taht there are still some countries advising their citizen to avoid the area even if it is more Songkla, Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala that are declared no go zones by most of foreign ministers.
