Elephants sanctuaries to see in Thailand

Elephants sanctuaries to discover in Thailand

Thailand is a country where elephants have always had an important role. They even appeared on the national flag. There are traces of their domestication dating back centuries, with their use on the battlefield. After being used in the wood industry, before it was banned after the arrival of machines capable of replacing them in this exhausting task, they were used in tourism. Mainly to ride tourists on their backs. In often unenviable conditions. It was then that sanctuaries began to emerge to offer them more pleasant places to live and better conditions. The first of them, the one that raised awareness, was the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai. I summarize, all this roughly here of course.

In Elephant sanctuaries, visitors have the opportunity to interact with elephants. They can observe them in their natural habitat, feed them, sometimes bathe them or simply spend time watching them evolve freely. There is no charter nor standard, which means that a center can call itself a sanctuary without necessarily being a place so concerned about the well-being of its elephants.

Sorry, but if at one time I had selected elephant sanctuaries in Thailand that seemed really ethical, I ended up emptying my list and now let you find by yourself the elelphant sanctuary that suits you according to your values and beliefs.

Elephant Nature Park

Elephant Nature Park

Chiang Mai
It is the elephant sanctuary of reference in Thailand. There, you are sure to live a beautiful and respectful encounter with elephants. Because even if things slowly change (thanks to the work of Lek Chailert the founder of the park and the people she gathered around her), there are still many elephant camps or so-called sanctuaries where animal welfare is not a concern.
Phuket Elephant Sactuary

Phuket Elephant Sactuary

Phuket
This elephant sanctuary is one of the most respectful in Thailand. By going there, you will live a beautiful encounter with elephants while being sure to not involuntarily participate in their abuse. This is one of the two elephant sanctuaries I recommend in Phuket.
Samui Elephant Sanctuary

Samui Elephant Sanctuary

Koh Samui
This respectful elephant sanctuary opened in early 2018. It is the first elephant sanctuary on an island that had until then only elephants trekking camps. By going there, you will live a beautiful encounter with elephants while being sure to not involuntarily participate in their abuse.
Following Giants

Following Giants

Koh Lanta
This elephant sanctuary in Koh Lanta offers, as its name suggests, to follow the elephants. Here, you will walk alongside them, you will observe them but never touch them, nor will you have any other interaction than looking at them (no riding on their backs, no bathing with them, even feeding them, only the mahouts feed them).
Elephant Valley Thailand

Elephant Valley Thailand

Chiang Rai
This elephant sanctuary opened in 2016. It offers a truly respectful and responsible meeting with the elephants experience. You will not ride them, you will not wash them, you will not watch them do tricks to entertain you, you will just observe them live their elephant life at a reasonable distance. The goal of this park is to let elephants be elephants and that's why I recommend it.
