What to see in Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is the party island with the Full Moon Party and its variations, but it is also beautiful beaches, a forest with waterfalls and mountains offering wonderful walks and some interesting attractions . Attractions like Wat Khao Tham temple in the forest with a breathtaking view of the sunset or Wat Pho and its herbal sauna for a ridiculous price. Go in the land of the island, stroll on the east coast, you will discover that prior to be the magnet for partygoers, Koh Phangan is also and above all an island blessed by the nature.
I also listed at the end of the page some good tours, excursions and activities that you can do in Koh Phangan or from Koh Phangan. Click here to see them.

Must-visit places in Koh Phangan

Koh Ma island

เกาะม้า
My opinion :
starstarstar
This small wild island, even if there are some bungalows, faces Koh Phangan and is connected to the main island at low tide by a sand bank. The picture of Koh Ma and this sandbank is probably one of the best known images of Koh Phangan. Kayaks can be rented to go around the island and its reef is also a nice spot for snorkeling.
than-sadet-waterfall-koh-phangan.jpg

Than Sadet Waterfall

ธารเสด็จน้ำตก
My opinion :
starstarstar
It is the most famous waterfall in Koh Phangan for its size, its many pools where you can bathe with water all year long or almost when the other waterfalls are dried several months a year and for its history with the Kings of Thailand and more particularly Rama V and Rama IX.

Other nice places to visit in Koh Phangan

Wat Pho

Wat Pho

starstarstarstarstar and its little herbal sauna open every afternoon. It welcomes you for a ridiculous price of 10 baht. The temple itself has nothing exceptional.
Wat Khao Tham

Wat Khao Tham

starstarstarstar small temple on a hill which is especially interesting for its peaceful atmosphere among the trees and the view it offers on the area particularly beautiful at sunset. It is also a meditation center that regularly hosts foreigners.
Phaeng Waterfall

Phaeng Waterfall

starstarstarstar the most impressive waterfall in Ko Phangan. It is located in Thansadej National Park but at the end of the dry season, there is just than a trickle of water and it is much less impressive. Try to come earlier or during raining season.
Wat Thong Nai Pan

Wat Thong Nai Pan

starstarstar This small temple is worth a visit, especially if you are staying on Thong Nai Pan beach, for its chedi built with thousands of empty beer bottles. Its interior with the light passing through the colored glass is amazing! The temple is located at the end of the beach and is easy to access by walking.
Koh Phangan Giant Tree

Koh Phangan Giant Tree

starstar This is definitely not a must visit in Koh Phangan but if you are going to enjoy the little Wat Pho herbal sauna, the Giant Yang Na Yai tree is really not far away, less than 5 minutes walk and really impressive.
Wang Sai Waterfall

Wang Sai Waterfall

starstar Less known waterfall in Koh Phangan but which thanks to an artificial pond has enough water all year round to bathe. There is also a recreation center with an amber tree.

Other visits suggestions in Koh Phangan

  • Other waterfalls
like Than Sadet or Thabn Prawet, a series of waterfalls
  • The fishermen village of Chakolum
  • Ang Thong National Marine Park
The Ang Thong National Marine Park is an archipelago of about 42 islands offering breathtaking sceneries. All the islands are uninhabited and undeveloped except two: Koh Paluay, inhabited by gypsies of the sea and Koh Wua Talap where the park office and the bungalows for those who would like to spend the night there are located. There are also two lovely beaches, the Buaboke Cave and the most famous viewpoint of Ang Thong. The other must-see of any excursion in the park is Thale Nai, a beautiful emerald saltwater lake. Admission to the park costs 300 baht per person. All Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao agencies offer boat trips to the Ang Thong Marine Park with snorkeling and diving but it is Koh Samui which is the nearest island.
