Contrary to what some people sometimes think when visiting it, this place is not a temple but a set of 40 black houses (not all black actually) created by Thawan Duchanee, a Thai artist. Inside, the decoration is quite atypical it is composed of collections of paintings, sculptures, animal bones, skins, horns... It is not exactly the most peaceful and serene place in Chiang Rai. The many buffalo skulls and bones of all kinds may disturb or even disgust some visitors.

We like or do not like but the Black House is certainly the best known and visited place in Chiang Rai after the the White Temple. If you have the possibility, I advise you to also visit the beautiful Blue Temple almost on the road from Chiang Rai to the Black House and why not Wat Huai Pla Kung temple and its big white statue of Guan Im a few kilometers away.

How to get to Black House (Baan Dam) ?

The Black House is a few kilometers out of the city of Chiang Rai. There is apparently a local bus that could drop you off the highway near the Black House and then you have to walk 10 minutes, but the best way to get there is by car or motobile or to negotiate with one of the small blue cars circulating in Chiang Rai. There are always some of them at Bus Terminal 1 in the city. If you hire a blue car or a tuk-tuk, ask for a short tour Blue Temple, Black House and Wat Huai Pla Kung temple.
