Travel guide to go and visit Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta is a still quiet touristic place. It is very popular with backpackers who can find accommodation in very rudimentary bungalows near the beach at incredibly low prices, not crowded beaches with white sand and turquoise warm sea. For lounging, sunbathing, swimming and snorkling far away from the bustle of the other islands is the ideal destination. The nightlife is necessarily less busy and there are not so many activities proposed of course but you can still dive, do some other water activities and go around the island.
Koh Lanta is a little piece of paradise not yet completly stained by massive tourism. But it probably will not last.
Accommodations in Koh Lanta
For those who love living in a Robinson Crusoe way and sleeping in a bamboo hut in rough comfort, Koh Lanta has many cheap accommodation to offer. Of course besides these simple and very basic resorts there are other hotels and more comfortable accommodation. But what we particularly appreciate in Koh lanta is its relaxed atmosphere not as touristy as the other islands in the area. Koh Lanta is still a little wild and has many basic bungalows rooms.

Practical information about Koh Lanta
Once away from the pier, you have more difficulty to find motorcycle taxis or shared taxis. If you want to explore the island you'd rather rent a scooter. There is an important muslim population in Koh Lanta, so if you are fan of late sleep, check if your hotel is not near a mosque before checking in.
How to go to Koh Lanta ?
Even if Koh Lanta is an island it is not only accessible by boat. There are also minivans trips that take the two little ferrys to cross the little sea arms from the mainland and arrive on the island. In low season, it is often the only option. In high season, you can also connect to Koh Lanta from Kho Phi Phi (
see here) or Railay without returning to Krabi.

My opinion :
starstarstarstarstar
One of the most popular diving sites in Thailand with underwater caves. The largest one is called the cathedral because of its shape. Koh Haa is actually a set of 5 islands located within the Mu Koh Lanta National Marine Park. Diving is offered in high season (from October 15 to May 15 in general).

This beautiful island (in fact, it is 2 islands) with preserved nature is about 30 kilometers from Koh Lanta. White sandy beaches, clear turquoise waters and coral reefs and the junge that surrounds it make Koh Rok the ideal destination for diving or snorkeling. Day trips are offered by all agencies from Koh Lanta or Trang islands.

This elephant sanctuary in Koh Lanta offers, as its name suggests, to follow the elephants. Here, you will walk alongside them, you will observe them but never touch them, nor will you have any other interaction than looking at them (no riding on their backs, no bathing with them, even feeding them, only the mahouts feed them).
Lanta Old Town
starstarstar Lanta Old Town was the capital of the island about a century ago. There is a more authentic atmosphere with wooden houses, some on the waterfront on stilts. Not many tourists go there but it dies not lack of charm and offers beautiful views of the surrounding islands.
Tung Yee Peng Village
starstarstar This small village on the East side of Koh Lanta allows access to the mangrove where you can or kayak or rent longtail boats trips to the neighboring islands. Still little known, this is one of the places to do in Koh Lanta if you like ecotourism and want to change a bit from the beaches.
Koh Lanta has a tropical savannah climate and a six months rainy season between May and November with heavy rainfalls often brief but very regular especially from July to the end of October.
The best time to come to Koh Lanta is from December to March and especially in January-February, the sunniest months of the year here. From July to October the weather is wet, it is betterto avoid this period to come to Koh Lanta. May and June are a little better but not the best time to come here either.
