When you arrive at Koh Lanta, generally you arrive in Baan Saladan, the main village of the island, but there are about 20 kilometers further South a small village that was once the capital of Koh Lanta and is today nicknamed ''Lanta Old Town''. A place often ignored by tourists who usually go between Baan Saladan and the west coast beaches but which does not lack charm.

Lanta Old Town was originally an important port for sea gypsies. Over the decades it has become a village influenced by commerce and tourism. The old town has a fairly pronounced Chinese influence and the feeling that the time has stopped there even if the few shops and accommodations are clearly turned towards tourism. If you are looking for a bit of authenticity, there are some guesthouses in old wooden houses like the Old Times Lanta or Mango House or else you can just go there to discover the streets (especially the main street because it is not big), walk on the pier and lay down by the sea on the terrace of one of the restaurants on stilts that often have very good fish and seafood and offer a nice view on the surrounding islands.

Practical information about Lanta Old Town

Koh Lanta Old Town is a often ignored by tourists who navigate between Baan Saladan and Ko Lanta beaches but it does not lack charm and has some nice café and restaurants.

How to get to Lanta Old Town ?

There is no public transport to come to Lanta Old Town, you will have to have your own locomotion or hire someone to take you there. You can rent a scooter, or if you are little more brave, rent a bike. That's what I did but it can be challenging. On the other hand, on the way from Baan Saladan you can stop at the nice Yee Peng Village.
