Lanta Old Town was originally an important port for sea gypsies. Over the decades it has become a village influenced by commerce and tourism. The old town has a fairly pronounced Chinese influence and the feeling that the time has stopped there even if the few shops and accommodations are clearly turned towards tourism. If you are looking for a bit of authenticity, there are some guesthouses in old wooden houses like the Old Times Lanta or Mango House or else you can just go there to discover the streets (especially the main street because it is not big), walk on the pier and lay down by the sea on the terrace of one of the restaurants on stilts that often have very good fish and seafood and offer a nice view on the surrounding islands.
