Right next to
Wat Phra That Doi Jom Thong, there is an esplanade with a grouping of 108 pillars of the city of Chiang Rai. The central pillar represents Mount Meru, according to Hindu mythology, it is surrounded by 108 other pillars and 5 channels symbolizing the universe and the Big Five Rivers. The Navel City Pillar of Chiang Rai was built here in 1987 for the 725 years anniversary of Chiang Rai city. The 6 stepped platforms illustrate the 6 floors of paradise. According to local belief, the main pillar is as big as the King Meng Rai, founder of Chiang Rai. It stands on a pedestal with three levels representing the three states Rupabrahma, Arupabrahma and Nirvana.
