Wat Phra That Doi Jom Thong is located on the top of a small hill on the banks of Kok River just behind the
Wat Phra Kaew. The temple is small and not that interesting. In the middle, there is a small plaza with a 14 meters high chedi. Its lotus flower shaped base is white and the rest of the pagoda is covered with gold. The chedi houses a relic even older than the city itself. The interest in climbing here is especially for the view you can have at some points and the neighborhood around which is a bit less urban. Moreover, history tells that it is by observing the area from this hill that King Meng Rai decided to found the city of Chiang Rai in 1260. The city pillars are a few meters from the temple.
