Wat Phra That Choeng Chum Worawihan is the most important temple in Sakon Nakhon city. There were already a temple at this location in the 10th century, during the reign of the Khmer empire, because the place was visited by 4 reincarnations of Buddha who have left a footprint there. The temple white chedi is 24-meters high with a golden point and dates from the 17th century. It was assumely built on the site of the 4 Buddha footprints. The other important element here is the chapel of Luang Pho Ong Saen, a venerated Chiang Saen style Buddha image. While it is the most sacred in the province, Wat Phra That Choeng Chum is also a very important temple for all Buddhists in Thailand.
