The small village kilometers south of Chiang Khan, is often nicknamed Ban Tai Dam because it is inhabited by the Tai Dam who migrated here from Vietnam in the early twentieth century and try to preserve their traditions thanks to the small museum in the village. There you will discover their artcrafts, old houses and utensils, their traditional clothes and if you go there the weekend or in the middle of the afternoon, when the school is finished, you will be able to live moments of sharing with the children who will show you their traditional games and how skillful they are on stilts. You can also discover the folk dances of Tai Dam and try yourself. The steps are pretty easy. It is also possible to sleep in one of the homestays of the village. I have not tested but I have an excellent memory of my 2 hours in the museum.
Guide to visit Tai Dam Village
Free entrance but to support them you can buy some souvenirs in the shop like for instance the Tum Nok Tum Noo, little spirit houses.
The museum is open from 9 am to 5 pm but I advise you to go there around 3:30 or 4 pm when the children are there, it's not the same atmosphere.
If you want to sleep in one of their homestays, you can call 084 925 0771 (mobile), they have someone that speaks perfect English.
There is no transportation to the village but you can get dropped on the main road by one of the songtheaws that make the connection between Loei and Chiang Khan and someone will pick you up at the crossroads of the Ban That Police Station. Call the same number to organize it.
Offered in English Discover 3 provinces of Isan, a region preserved from mass tourism as it is very little offered to foreign tourists. Between temples, natural wonders and moments of simple life with the locals, you will meet artisans and enjoy magnificent sunrises and sunsets over the Mekong River.
