Your Travel Guide to Thailand
All information & tips to prepare your trip in Thailand
Nestled in the heart of the mountains of Nan Province, Bo Kluea is a village whose name literally means "salt wells", referring to its natural saltwater springs despite being located in the middle of the mountains, hundreds of kilometers from the sea. These ancient salt wells and the area's spectacular mountain scenery have made Bo Kluea famous throughout Thailand.
Here, salt is still produced using traditional methods from natural underground brine. Villagers draw the salty water from the wells and boil it for several hours in large cauldrons until white salt crystals form. This ancestral technique has been passed down from generation to generation.
Salt production in Bo Kluea dates back more than 1,000 years. At a time when salt was a strategic resource essential for food preservation, the area became an important trading center. Bo Kluea salt was traded throughout the ancient Lanna Kingdom and as far as Laos and southern China. Control of these wells was even a political and military issue.
While the salt wells are the main attraction, the village itself has retained an authentic atmosphere. Above all, Bo Kluea is surrounded by mountains and the scenery is stunning, especially when the rice fields are lush and green. There are many guesthouses and homestays offering an exceptional natural setting that is particularly popular with Thai tourists, who visit in large numbers during weekends and long public holiday weekends, especially around the New Year period.
P.S. I have provided the coordinates of the small museum, but there are several other salt wells located along the same road a little before reaching it.
The salt wells open to visitors are accessible every day from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
There is a local bus service connecting Pua and Bo Kluea (the last time I checked, it was a songthaew). It is quite slow on the winding mountain roads and not ideal if you want to fully enjoy the scenery along this route, which is considered one of the most beautiful mountain roads in Thailand. Having your own vehicle is therefore the best option. The roads linking Pua and Bo Kluea are among the most scenic in the country and offer numerous spectacular viewpoints. There is also a local bus connecting Nan and Pua. The challenge is coordinating the two services without having to wait too long in Pua. However, I would recommend spending at least one night in Pua and staying in one of the accommodations surrounded by rice fields. It is one of my absolute favorite places in Northern Thailand!
