Located about thirty kilometers from Loei, Wat Tham Pha Ya is famous, not for its architecture or its Buddhas, but for a phenomenon that occurs every evening a little before sunset: the flight of millions of bats who live in a cave in the mountain behind the temple. Between 5 pm and 6 pm at a time that varies slightly depending on the time of year, it is a real cloud of bats that flows into the plain. Really impressive ! It takesabout 15-20 minutes to empty the cave of its occupants who go hunting at night and return to the cave at dawn.
The cave is accessed by a staircase at the left of the temple's ordination hall. It's up to you to choose if you want to see this black cloud coming out of the cave as close as possible or prefer to watch it from afar. As you can see in my photos, I decided to be at the entrance of the cave.
