The Bun Bang Fai or Rocket Festival in English is held annually on the second Saturday of May and usually lasts 3 days.
It marks the beginning of the rainy season in Thailand and aims to calm down the spirits of the rain. It should ensure that people would be blessed with showers of plentiful rain which would allow the cultivation of rice.
Legend says that the origins of this festival are from the ancient pre-Buddhist era and the rockets have been introduced in the 9th century when the powder has become to be known in Southeast Asia.
The day of the festival itself, there is parade of rockets of various styles and sizes to the launch site in Phaya Thaen Park. The festival's highlight is the contest of the rocket that goes the highest or the furthest. The program also included a parade in traditional costume, street shows and a beauty pagent.
