Must-sees & Must-Dos in Nong Khai?

What to do and see in Nong Khai

The must do visit in Nong Khai is Sala Kaew Ku (or Wat Kaek the name of Temple). In the park, there are huge cement statues of Buddhas and other figures more or less mythological and religious. A truly amazing place ! Otherwise, the most important temple in the city is Wat Pho Chai. Not very interesting from the outside but its interior with its colorful paintings worth a look. Shopping enthusiasts will go to Tha Sadet market or the night market that is held on Saturday evening. And of course, in the evening, go one Mekong river banks to see the sunset.

A park with huge amazing cement sculptures. Mix of Buddhism and Hinduism figures and character from its creator's dreams, the aprk houses dozens of statues. The biggest are over 20 meters high. This is the most incredible visit to do Nong Khai ! The park is located a bit outside of the town but is very easy to access.

Recently built at Wat Pha Tak Suea which is located 81 kilometers from Nong Khai, the Sky Walk, a small glass walkway above the void allows you to enjoy even more the exceptional view over Mekong river offered by this temple perched on a mountain.

Other nice places to visit in Nong Khai

Wat Phu Tok

Wat Phu Tok

starstarstarstarstar The set of stairs and wooden footbridges installed in mountain flank and which allows to climb as the Phu Tok mount of 359 meters high on 7 levels is just impressive! And offers great views. On the other hand, it is not near Nong Khai but near Bueng Khan small friendly town and little tourist at 130 km from Nong Khai.
Phu Huai Isan Viewpoint

Phu Huai Isan Viewpoint

starstarstarstarstar Phu Huai Isan mountain offers one of the most beautiful views over the Mekong in the region. It’s especially magical at sunrise! But it's not just the view that makes this visit exceptional, the tractor ride with a local is epic and fun! It adds fun and makes it, for me, one of the best ways to start the day in Thailand!
Wat Pho Chai

Wat Pho Chai

starstarstar this is the most important temple in Nong Khai. It is mainly the inside of the ordination hall with its beautiful murals and its sitting Buddha statue made of gold, bronze and ruby that worth the visit. The Buddha image has a interesting story that you can see on some of the murals.
Wat Tham Si Mongkhon (Din Pieng Cave)

Wat Tham Si Mongkhon (Din Pieng Cave)

starstarstar This cave located in the forest part of Wat Tham Si Mongkhon temple in Nong Khai province is interesting and fun to visit. But it is not a must-see. Especially if you're claustrophobic or don't want to get dirty, crawling on the floors in a little water.
Wat Lam Duan

Wat Lam Duan

starstar temple with a large Buddha statue sitting on the roof where you can climb and have a magnificent panoramic view of the Mekong river particularly nice to watch the sunset.
Rail Market (Old Nong Khai Railway Station)

Rail Market (Old Nong Khai Railway Station)

starstar This station, replaced since 2000 by the current one, has been preserved in its original form and transformed into a small museum. It also hosts a nice little market on Sundays. A place for train fans looking for a slightly retro local atmosphere.

Other visits suggestions in Nong Khai

  • Nong Khai Aquarium
Located relatively far outside the city and underserved by public transport, Nong Khai aquarium hosts marine or river fishes. People mainly come for its giant catfish (open Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 4.30 pm - Entry fee: 100 THB)
