Located at the entrance of the old city of Lamphun and a 5-minute walk from Wat Hariphunchai, Pratu Ta Nang is one of the ancient gates of the fortified city of the Hariphunchai Kingdom, founded here more than 1,200 years ago.
This emblematic site recalls the splendor of the Mon era and the strategic importance of Lamphun, once a powerful capital before the rise of Chiang Mai.
This gate was part of the defensive system of the city, which was surrounded by moats and brick ramparts, remnants of which can still be seen in several places.
The Pratu Ta Nang gate, literally in Thai, “the Lady’s Gate”, is linked to a local legend telling that a woman from the royal court waited here for her warrior husband, who never returned. Since then, the gate has symbolized loyalty and patience.
