Tha Sadet Market is the most famous market in Nong Khai. Set along the banks of the Mekong, it's known for its lively atmosphere and countless shops selling a little bit of everything — clothing, toys, groceries, spices, handicrafts, cafés, restaurants, and more. It's wonderful to wander through its aisles, but it's also worth slipping away now and then to make your way down to the Mekong riverfront.

Originally, the market was a key trading post between Thailand and Laos. Even today, it retains that cross-border character, with goods from both countries as well as from Vietnam and China. Since I'd recommend a stroll along the riverfront anyway, popping in to pick up a few things — or just out of curiosity — is well worth it. That said, don't expect a market brimming with charm: think concrete and corrugated metal roofs. And it is a local market not a market for foreign tourists.
