To get to Ayutthaya from Bangkok, you have the choice between the train or the minivans (from the Chatuchak Minibus Station in front of Mo Chit Bus Terminal) or of course the taxi. Journey duration by rail or passenger minivan are about the same. The 3rd class train is the cheapest. But note that train tickets for short distances like this cannot be booked on the internet (actually some can, but only less than 48 hours before departure day and only on the official SRT website) but you can buy your train tickets to Ayutthaya at the station just before departure, there is always seat available, at least in 3rd class. Just allow enough extra time to buy your ticket. ATTENTION, since January 19, 2023, long distance trains from Bangkok serving Ayutthaya leave from the new railway station, the Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station, ordinary trains still leave from Hua Lamphong station. You can consult the timetables and departure stations for trains between Bangkok and Ayutthaya HERE.

The train is the cheapest way to travel in Thailand especially in 3rd class. This is also where the contact with the population is the most interesting and incredible...
Taking the plance to travel in Thailand is often not that much more expensive than the bus especially with the numerous specials offers and it is so much faster !
