The reclining Buddha has been restored, but in such a way that it looks completely new and no longer a centuries-old statue. For me, and I think for many, all the charm and weight of history has been erased by this renovation. Which makes me remove Wat Lokaya Sutha from my must-sees in Ayutthaya.
Wat Lokaya Sutha is part of the group of temples behind the Wat Mongkhon Bophit, after the river. Just after Wat Woratcheta Ram.
It is especially its immense reclining Buddha, 37 meters long and 8 meters high, that is worth the detour. Well, it was worth the detour because it was renovated at the end of 2024 and today, from my point of view, it looks too new and has lost its historical cachet as a 16th or 1st century monument. Really a shame! It is the largest reclining Buddha in Ayutthaya, which has several (I had written an article on it). For the rest, there remain only traces of the foundations on the ground, a prang and an esplanade.

To get to Wat Lokaya Sutha like most temples in Ayutthaya city center or nearby, you can choose to rent a bike from one of the many rental shops in the city or from your hotel or guesthouse (they sometimes make them available for their hosts for free) or rent a tuk-tuk and just to go to this specific temple or for a whole city tour for a price around 200 THB per hour.
