This monument pays tribute to King Meng Rai who founded the city of Chiang Rai in 1262. He was the 25th monarch of the Lawa Dynasty and the first king of the Meng Rai Dynasty. He brought together several small states to form a large nation presently known as "Lanna". Chiang Mai was Its capital city. The statue of King Meng Rai here is highly venerated by locals.
