Information about Tak Bat Thevo Festival

This festival is held the day after Ok Phansa that marks the end of Buddhist Lent. ak Bat Devo comes from the word Devorohana, which means the day the Buddha returned from his visit to his mother in Tavatimsa Heaven. As the legend goes, the villagers of Sung Gus Nakorn were very delighted when the Buddha returned so they came to give food offerings to him. This event was called Tak Bat Devorohana and later named Tak Bat Devo.
In Thailand, the biggest event of this tradition is held at Wat Sangkat Rattana Khiri a perched temple in Uthai Thani. This day is especially marked by the offerings to the many monks who descend the long 449 steps staircase from the chedi. It starts at 8:30 with prayers then dancers go up the stairs to welcome the monks. It is advisable to be there at least 1 hour in advance because the crowd is huge. The offerings lasts about one hour. Then there is a parade from the bus station
