The mountain of Doi Suthep overlooking the city of Chiang Mai and its top is one of the most popular temples of Thailand, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.Un long staircase where each ramp is a body of dragon and has 309 steps allows arriving at the temple (also exists for a cab ride without effort). From above, if the weather is clear, the view of the valley is superb.
Guide to visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Entrance to the temple: 30 baht
Price of the cable car to go up if you don't take the stairs: 50 baht
Note that it is also interesting to visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep at sunrise to attend and/or participate in the offerings to the monks and have the temple almost to yourself and you will then have to reserve your red car the day before.
A fifteen kilometers from Chiang Mai, the temple is accessible by a winding road up the mountain. There is a Doi Suthep Line departing from near Chiang Mai zoo and taking you to the temple for 30 THB per person. The red pick-ups of this line only leave when they have 10 passengers (or ask everyone to pay a little more). From Chiang Mai historical center or anywhere in the city, take a red pickup and tell Doi Suthep bus station to be dropped at the place from where the Doi Suthep Line departs (30 THB per person from the historical center). When you come back from Doi Suthep, you can be dropped directly at Thapae Gate by these same red pick-ups for 60 THB.
Otherwise, red cars offer you to take you to Doi Suthep from the city, wait for you when you visit and bring you back in town for 400 THB (no matter how many people). If you are more than two, it's probably better than using the Doi Suthep Line.
