Nestled in the jungle and accessible by a road that is more bumpy dirt track than road for the last 5 kilometers, Wat Luang Khun Win is an old temple that is said to be more than 700 years old. Very little known to foreign tourists, it has been visited more and more by Thais since the construction of its stairs and new pavilion, and especially since a series of publications on social networks showed its beauty.
I don't have much information about the history of Wat Luang Khun Win temple because there are very few publications on the internet and I the only monk I saw was not available to speak. But for its setting and its atmosphere surrounded by jungle, the beauty of its Naga staircase with unique steps, and its small wooden pavilion which houses a reclining Buddha, it is worth the detour! A not-so-easy detour (see below).

How to get to Wat Luang Khun Win ?
Wat Luang Khun Win is located in Mae Wang district about sixty kilometers east of Chiang Mai city. it takes a 1 hour 45 minutes drive to get there. You have to be transported and need a 4x4 vehicle for the last 5 kilometers on a dirt track through the jungle. If you do not have one, there is parking where you can stop and hire a pickup to take you for the last 5 km (600 THB per car, regardless of the number of passengers).
I added a detour via Wat Luang Khun Win on the road to go to Doi Inthanon (between the deviation from the main road there and back and the visit of the temple, count 1h30 more). The road before sinking into the jungle passes through beautiful landscapes of mountains and rice fields.
The trek guide friend with whom I went there loved this temple and will add it to the program of one of his treks to Doi Inthanon soon so if you are interested, contact Tee via the form at the bottom of this page.
