If the other bank with the Grand Palace and Wat Pho attracts a lot of tourists, the Thonburi district on the other side of the Chao Phraya River is much less visited! It is a picturesque district of Bangkok that transports you to another time. Located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, Thonburi offers a real change of scenery, transporting visitors to another universe, almost like a small village with its alleys, far from the hustle and bustle of the modern city. Its history, traditional architecture and unique attractions make it a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic and immersive off-the-beaten-track experience in Bangkok.

Among the must-see attractions in Thonburi Bangkok, there is obviously the Wat Arun, the best known and most visited monument in the district. But in general, tourists only travel by ferry from the other side of the river and do not venture beyond the temple. Among the other monuments in Thonburi and significant attractions of the district, we note the Wat Prayoon and its unique white architecture, the charming Khao Mo Replica garden that many miss even if it is next to it, the Santa Cruz church and the community Kundeejeen installed on its right, the Buddhist temple Wat Kalayamanit and the oldest Chinese sanctuary of Bangkok. You will also find the Royal Barges Museum there.

As for me, the best way to visit Thonburi district of Bangkok and soak up its atmosphere is to do it on foot, following, for example, the route of my Thonburi Walking Tour .

Practical information about Thonburi district

You can choose Wat Arun as a starting point to visit Thonburi or do like me, start from the Memorial Bridge. The entrances to all the places I mention, including the Kudichin museum, are free.

How to get to Thonburi district ?

To get to Thonburi, you can opt for the MRT metro and get off at Sanam Chai then walk to Tha Thien Pier (the one near Wat Pho) and take the ferry to cross the river to reach Wat Arun and start your visit in Thonburi with this temple. Another option, which I prefer, is to go to Memorial Bridge pier by Chao Phraya Express boats and start your Thonburi tour from this bridge.
