Member of the Save Elephant Foundation, Elephant Study Center in Surin province is in an ancient Kui village, Baan Tha Klang. In 2009, Sangduen Lek Chailert founded the Surin Project to support the mahouts living in the Surin Elephant Study Center and offer their elephants a better life. Each mahout who joins the project, receive a monthly salary to fully support his family. In return, each mahout must agree to follow some rules like unchaining his elephant at least three hours per day, no longer take part in elephant shows or offer tourists to ride his elephant. If you wish, you can volunteer in the center and take care of the elephants. If you are interested, please visit

Just next to the Study Center, there is an elephant park who offers shows and elephant rides but has nothing to do with the Surin Elephant Project which fight exploitation of elephants for tourism.
