Your Travel Guide to Thailand
All information & tips to prepare your trip in Thailand
Located along the Chanthaburi River in the old town of Chanthaburi, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the largest Catholic church in Thailand. With its Gothic architecture and colorful stained-glass windows, it is a must-see for any traveler passing through the province.
The Christian presence in Chanthaburi dates back to the 17th century, but the current cathedral dates from the late 19th century. It was built by Vietnamese Catholic refugees fleeing religious persecution in their country, with the support of French missionaries. Work began in 1906 and was completed in 1909.
The church was first built of wood, then replaced by a brick and mortar building in a very distinctive European Gothic Revival style. It was also during this period that France exerted a certain influence in the region, notably during the occupation of Chanthaburi by French troops from 1893 to 1905.
Combine your visit to Chanthaburi Cathedral with a walking tour of the neighborhood Historic district along the river: restored small houses, cafes, art galleries and the Chanthaboon market await you for an immersion in the Chanthaburi of yesteryear.
