People often wrongly think that they can go to Sukhothai by train. But the nearest town served by the train is Phitsanulok. From there buses leave every hour to New Sukhothai (1:30 drive), the city adjacent to the Sukhothai Historical Park. You can also come by bus of course. From Bangkok, buses leave from Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal. There are also a few daily buses from Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Ayutthaya, which are very handy as they can drop you directly near Sukhothai Historical Park entrance. These are the buses for which I indicate 'Historical park' offered by Wintour or Transport Co Ltd. Sukhothai also has a small airport and a few flight connections with Bangkok. There is a shuttle that connects the airport to the Sukhothai Bus Terminal in 40 minutes (last price quoted: 18 THB). Sukhothai Airport has a small zoo. Otherwise you can land in Phitsanulok airport and make the rest of the journey by road.

From Sukhothai you can take buses to continue your trip to the North or to go back to Bangkok ( and maybe stop in Ayutthaya ). Note that from the street facing Sukhothai Historical Park main entrance, you can take buses to Bangkok, Ayutthaya (you will be dropped on the highway) or Chiang Mai without having to go to the bus terminal. I indicate 'Historical park' on this buses line They are offered by Wintour or Transport Co Ltd who have offices at 300-400 meters from the historical park entrance. There are also songtaews or buses to go to Kamphaeng Phet if you want to visit this city which has a historical park of the same period as Sukhothai. If you want to take the train you will have to go to Phitsanulok. By plane, from Sukhothai airport, you can go to Bangkok or Lampang but check the time tables because there is only a few flights per week. From Phitsanulok airport, flights to Bangkok are more frequent.

The train is the cheapest way to travel in Thailand especially in 3rd class. This is also where the contact with the population is the most interesting and incredible...
Taking the plance to travel in Thailand is often not that much more expensive than the bus especially with the numerous specials offers and it is so much faster !
