Chumphon's a flood of tourists is mainly due to the fact that the city is a point of embarkation for the Koh Tao, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Samui islands. At few kilometers from Chumphorn, there are certainly some nice beaches Hat Paradorn ,Hat Tha Wua Laen et Hat Sairee for instance but the city itself has not so much to offer. Generally tourist are just in transit. They sometimes spend the night before catching the boat to the islands. Yet the coast around offers some interesting places with deserted beaches. The area of Lang Suan is especially nice. To see all optiosn to get around in Chumphon, read our dedicated paragrpah about getting around in Chumphon.

My recommandations
People often ask me what accommodations I recommend in Thailand, here are my recommandations in Chumphon.
Two times a day boats leave Chumphon to go to Koh Tao then Kho Samui and then Koh Pha Ngan. There is a departure in the early morning and one in the beginning of the afternoon. Depending on the company you choose, the trip will be more or less long and the price more or less high. For Lomprayah express catamarans, book as soon as possible to be sure to have a place. You can book your tickets online HERE. Otherwise, you should find a place on Songsrem's boats. Departure times of the two companies are quite the same. There are also formulas enabling you to make the crossing by night.
How to go to Chumphon ?
You can go to Chumphon by train, the least expensive and slowest way to go there, or by bus. Buses depart from Bangkok Southern Terminal (Sai Tai Mai). You can book your tickets online HERE. If you come from the islands of Koh Tao, Koh Phangan or Koh Samui, different boat companies will propose you to go to Chumphon (you can book tickets HERE).
For trips outside Chumphon city, you can take the local buses or songthaews. So to go to the Wua Laen beach, take a yellow songthaew (but come back before 4 pm because sometimes the last songthaew does not come or just pass without passenger to go home). To go to Sairee Beach, there is a blue local bus. it is more frequent but try to go back to Chumphon before 5 pm.
Festivals in Chumphon ?
Here is a list of the main festivals taking place every year in Chumphon. I mention their dates as soon as they are official on Thai Festivals page.
Koh Tao island starstarstarstarstar Located in Surat Thani province, Koh Tao island is also accessible from Chumphon. It is actually more practical and faster to get there via Chumphon from Bangkok. It is the most famous destination for diving in Thailand. But its picture-postcard sandy beaches, its landscapes, viewpoints and its tourist activities do not only attract divers or candidates for a first dive. Come for several days as there is no day trip and anyway, you have to stay to really enjoy Ko Tao.
Chumphon has a tropical monsoon climate. Temperatures are warm during all year. The period with the most favorable weather is from December to April while from May to November the precipitation can be very heavy but generally brief. October and November are the rainiest months.
