Thao Suranaree Monument, it's a statue on a pedestal of the city heroin, Thao Suranaree standing just in front of the Chumphon Gate. Built in 1934, it became the symbol of Nakhon Ratchasima. There is an altar at the foot of the monument with a smaller replica of the statue. This replica is in fact the real object of the devotion of the people coming all day long to honor and pray her, give offerings and paste small gold leaves on the little statue.
Thao Suranaree or Ya Mo was heroic during the war between the Kingdom of Siam and Loas. In 1826 she mead the villagers to get rid of the lao invader. Although some question the authenticity of this story, a festival to honor Thao Suranaree is held annually on March 23.
