Nang Talung Shadow Puppet Theater Thailand
Nang Talung Museum
Ban Nang Talung Suchart Subsin is a small museum in Nakhon Si Thammarat City dedicated to Nang Talung, a traditional shadow puppets theater where live performances can also be seen. This is Lung Suchart, one of the masters of this art, that gave the name to the place. He initiated and transmitted the culture of these games of shadow play in the province. In the museum section, you will find a large collection of ancient puppets, a small workshop to demonstrate how to manufacture them from leather and upstairs, a gallery with the history of this art and its iconic characters. They are angels, demons, lords, male actors, ghosts, a king, jokers... But the highlight of any visit here is the representation during which you have the right to watch both sides of the screen (call before, because it's on demand, I put the phone number below).

This is one of the important tourist attractions in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Many Thai tourists come to visit and watch the performances of Nang Talung. The museum is a 5 minute walk from Wat Phra Mahathat Worama Wihan. The flaw of this place, and it is because the foreign tourists are not that numerous, is that the panels of the museum, the show and the explanations are in Thai only. There is one person who can give you explanations in English but they will be much more succinct.

Practical information about Shadow puppets museum

No admission fee but it's 100 THB to attend the Nang Talung performance which is the main reason to come here ! They need a minimum group of 4 people to start a show otherwise you may have to pay a little more. Which is quite normal.
The museum is open from 8.30 am to 5 pm but if you come in group, they can receive you until later. Before coming, call them at 075 346 394, ideally the day before. Without that, your chances of seeing a shadow play demonstration will be slim. Anyway, I can not guarantee that the person who speaks English will be available when you call. One solution may be to ask the front desk of your hotel to call them for you.

How to get to Shadow puppets museum ?

From Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, Nakhon Si Thammarat Nang Talung Museum is about ten minutes walk.
