Pha Chor is a rock formation in Mae Wang National Park about fifty kilometers southwest of Chiang Mai city. It is sometimes called the Grand Canyon of Chiang Mai even though the most famous place with this name is filled with water and much closer to the city.
A thousand years ago, the area was the passage of the Ping River which deviated its course. Pha Chor, the final part which is accessed after various stairs, is a 30 meters high cliff with a succession of columns naturally formed on several levels by an uplift of one of the tectonic plates, and the erosion due to the wind and rain. All things considered, some people see similarities with the Grand Canyon in the United States of America and call Phachor the Grand Canyon of Thailand (note that there is also Sam Pan Bok in Ubon Ratchathani province which has this nickname). But Pha Chor remains quite small and therefore has nothing to do with the gigantism of the American Grand Canyon.

How to get to Pha Chor Grand Canyon ?
There is no public transport to get to Pha Chor. It takes an hour's drive from Chiang Mai and there is not much of interest to visit in the immediate surroundings. As for me, coming to this area just for visiting it is not very interesting, unless you are passionate about geology. On the other hand, it may be a stopover on a journey between Chiang Mai city and the Doi Inthanon National Park.
