In fact, there are two grand canyons near Chiang Mai, the Hang Dong Grand Canyon, the best known and the one I'm talking about here, and the Pha Chor Canyon. The Hang Dong Grand Canyon is the one people refer to when talking about the grand canyon of Chiang Mai. Old quarries filled with fresh water about twenty kilometers from the center of Chiang Mai city, it is a nice place to go swimming and do water activities. There are two parks installed side by side, the first one with a more beautiful scenery where you can swim, relax on the water on a big black buoy or dive from a small cliff or cross the canyon on a zippeline and the Grand Canyon Waterpark with more activity and inflatables elements. The entry of the second one is more expensive (see below). Children will probably enjoy this one more but be careful, there have been some accidents including a fatal one after which the park had to review its safety policy.

Personally, I went to the park more "quiet" park where wearing a lifejacket is mandatory when in the water. The place is nice because there is a large area of ??water to swim and dive and the zippeline is funny even if a little pushy on the last meters of the way back. There are a lot more people in the afternoon but very little in the morning. Most visitors are foreign tourists. The small problem, but logical view the topography of the place is that there is almost no shade when you are in or on the water. Except a small corridor along the natural rock wall.
If you have time and are transported, I advise you to go after to Phufinn Doi & Terrace coffee shop for a snack, a little further on the hill. The view is beautiful and cakes and ice creams very good (85 to 165 THB).
