Almost all cities in Northern and Northeastern Thailand have their City pillar shrine, a shrine that encloses a pillar symbolically representing the place where the city was founded. The inhabitants but also passing travelers pay homage to it by wrapping colorful scarves around it. Even Thailand's capital city, Bangkok, has its city pillar shrine, right next to the Grand Palace.
In Udon Thani, the San Lak Muang (city pillar in Thai) is located in front of Thung Si Muang Park, not far from Nong Prajak Park. The complex also houses the statue of the deity Wetsuwan, guardian of the province (depicted in the provincial seal).
