You can get to Samut Songkhram by train from Bangkok from Wongwian Yai Station. From there take a train to Mahachai and then get out of the station, walk to the pier to catch the boat to cross the river and walk to Ban Laem station and take another train to the terminus Mae Klong (Samut Songkhram). By taking this train you will be in the cars going through the famous market. YOu can find the trains time tables on the transportation section of the website.
Otherwise, there are minivans from the South Bus Terminal in Bangkok (Sai Tai Mai) or Pinklao.

You can take the train combination again (Mae Klong - Ban Laem then Mahachai - Wongwian Yai by taking the ferry to cross the river and change train station between the two trains) or take a minivan to Mo Chit (in front of the Alongkorn Hotel 2 or at Samut Songkhram bus terminal) or to Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal or Pinklao or BTS Wutthakat station (from Samut Songkhram Bus Terminal). There is also a green local bus to Ratchaburi and a blue bus to Amphawa.
