Hua Lamphong Railway Station

Quick historical background

Opened in 1916, Hua Lamphong Station is one of the oldest and most iconic railway stations in Thailand. Designed by Italian architect Mario Tamagno in a neo-Renaissance style with Thai touches, it was Bangkok's main railway station for a long time until the opening of the new Krung Thep Aphiwat Station (also known as Bang Sue Grand Station) in early 2021. Since then, Hua Lamphong Station has not closed but no longer accommodates long-distance trains. All rail traffic is set to be moved to the new station, but the time frame is still unknown.

Practical information about Hua Lamphong Railway Station

• Buying tickets: There are ticket offices in the main hall that sell train tickets. For trains that still depart from Hua Lamphong station, it is usually still possible to buy tickets just before boarding the train. At least for 3rd class seats.
• Available services:
  • Toilets: Public toilets are available in the station. A contribution of 5 THB is required.
  • Since the opening of the new station, there is no longer a Food Center or luggage storage

Taxis and tuk-tuks are waiting for customers outside the station on the right side when you have the tracks behind you. This is also where the MRT subway entrance is located (Hua Lamphong station).

How to get to Hua Lamphong Railway Station?

In addition to taxis or tuk-tuks, or possibly on foot if you have chosen one of the hotels in Bangkok close to Bangkok station, Hua Lamphong station is accessible by MRT metro, Hua Lamphong station on the blue line. This is the most convenient by public transport even if there are a few bus lines that have stops near the station.

Useful notes

Even though in the vast majority of cases, the trains that interest tourists leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat station, double-check the departure station and times of your trains! There are 4 stations in the Thai capital: Krung Thep Aphiwat, Hua Lamphong, Thonburi and the small station of Wongwian Yaï.
