Don Muang Railway Station

Quick historical background

The Don Muang Railway Station, located in the Don Mueang district in northern Bangkok, was built in 1898 as a station on the railway line between Bangkok and Ayutthaya. Its importance increased considerably in 1914, with the opening of Don Muang Airport, which was then Bangkok's only airport (Suvarnabhumi Airport opened in 2006). In 2021, the station was modernized to integrate the high-speed train project between Bangkok and the northern provinces, the historic station was abandoned for a modern multi-storey station connected to the airport by a footbridge that accommodates long-distance trains but also those of the Red Line suburban line which connects in particular Don Mueang station to the Krung Thep Aphiwat railway station, Bangkok's central train station.

Practical information about Don Muang Railway Station

The new Don Muang station is not at ground level, but built above ground and connected to Don Muang Airport by a footbridge. Tickets for commuter and long-distance trains can be purchased directly at the station ticket office or online. For night trains, it is strongly recommended to book your tickets in advance, as all the berths may already be taken. For trains to Chiang Mai, tickets are available 180 days before the departure date. Online booking is done via the official website or via this Thailand booking website: 12go.asia.

When you get off the train, to reach the airport, follow the signs for Don Mueang Airport and you will arrive in Terminal 2, one floor below the domestic departures level. Take the escalators in front of the 7-Eleven and go up one floor, where you will find all the rows for checking in for domestic flights in Thailand. To reach the train station from the airport, follow the signs for Red Line. The access bridge to the train station is on the 3rd floor of Terminal 2.

For taxis, with the new elevated station, you must use the airport taxi rank.

How to get to Don Muang Railway Station?

The Don Muang Station is easily accessible from several parts of Bangkok. The most convenient way is to either take one of the commuter or short-distance trains that still depart from Hua Lamphong Station in central Bangkok (the cheapest option), taking into account the relative punctuality of the trains, or to use the Red Line, a commuter train line with a high frequency from Bang Sue Station (Krung Thep Aphiwat Station). Otherwise, as the station is connected to Don Muang Airport, all options for reaching the airport are valid. Then, simply go up to the 3rd floor of Terminal 2 to reach the footbridge.
