Staying in Cambodia: excellent value for money

Cambodia is one of the countries in Southeast Asia where you sleep best for your money. In Siem Reap in particular, there is a huge choice and competition keeps prices down: for the price of a basic room in Europe, you can treat yourself to a lovely boutique hotel with a pool, breakfast and attentive service. Prices are displayed and paid in US dollars.

How much does a hotel cost in Cambodia?

Indicative prices for a double room per night, outside high season:

  • Hostel dormitory: $5 to $10 per bed
  • Simple guesthouse (fan or air-conditioning): $12 to $25
  • Boutique or 3-star hotel with pool: $30 to $60
  • Upmarket boutique hotel: $70 to $150
  • Luxury hotels (Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, private islands): from $150 to $200, with some of the most beautiful places in Asia

The islands (Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem) and Kep are a little more expensive for the same level of comfort. Breakfast is often included.

Should you book your hotel in advance?

Outside busy periods, it is easy to find a room on the spot. It is however advisable to book in advance:

  • from December to February, especially in Siem Reap and for Christmas and New Year;
  • during Khmer New Year (mid-April), Pchum Ben (September or October) and the Water Festival in Phnom Penh (November), when Cambodians travel;
  • on the islands, where good places to stay are few and fully booked several weeks ahead in high season;
  • for your first night, especially if you arrive late: many hotels offer an airport transfer.

Choose a rate with free cancellation if possible: you keep the freedom to change your itinerary.

Practical tips

  • Passport: you will be asked for it at check-in; the hotel photocopies it but should not keep it.
  • Taxes: check whether the price shown includes VAT and service charges, which upmarket hotels sometimes add when you pay.
  • Airport transfer: in Siem Reap, the airport is 50 km from town. Many hotels offer a transfer, sometimes free for stays of a few nights: ask before booking.
  • Hotel tuk-tuk: in Siem Reap, many hotels work with trusted drivers for visiting the temples.
  • Islands: electricity and hot water can be limited in simple bungalows, and there is not always an ATM: read the reviews carefully and bring cash.
  • Noise: avoid rooms overlooking Pub Street in Siem Reap, or the main avenues in Phnom Penh, if you are a light sleeper.

Where to stay in Siem Reap?

Siem Reap

To be in a quiet area while staying within walking distance of the restaurants, look at the Wat Bo area or the streets near the river. Pub Street and the old market are convenient but noisy at night. Many hotels have a swimming pool, very welcome after a morning at the temples, and prices stay low even for beautiful places.

Where to stay in Phnom Penh?

Phnom Penh

The BKK1 area (Boeung Keng Kang) has the best restaurants and quiet hotels in every category. The riverfront (Riverside) is ideal for a first visit, within walking distance of the Royal Palace and the National Museum. For a more local stay, the Russian Market area (Tuol Tom Poung) has lovely guesthouses.
