Last round for Lumpini Boxing Stadium
We announced it here last year, the legendary Muay Thai (Thai boxing) stadium Lumpini Boxing Stadium will close in a few hours. It will host its last public fight night on Friday before being replaced by a brand new arena.
The first competition of Thai boxing at Lumpini stadium took place on March 15, 1956 . The complex in the center of Bangkok near Lumphini Park, managed by the Royal Thai Army, was inaugurated in December of the same year. It is one of the seven major Muay Thai stadiums in Thailand and the country’s most famous one and probably the world most famous.
The Army Welfare Department decided that the stadium needed a larger arena away from the heart of Bangkok and its traffic jam. It’s the end of an era for the legendary stadium of the most favorite sport in Thailand. A beautiful chapter in the history of Muay Thai is going to close tomorrow night with a special evening which will house high-profile boxers fights. The ticket price for the event is 400 baht for Thai citizens. We do not know the price for foreigners, but it should be significantly higher. Quite normal given that Muay Thai is part of Thai heritage.
The new stadium whose construction began in August 2012 is ready. It will keep the name of Lumpini Boxing Stadium, but will be pretty far from Lumpini Park. It is located on Ram Intra Road and has a capacity of 3,500 seats. The new Lumpinee Boxing Stadium will host its first fighters and spectators on February 11.
