Your Travel Guide to Thailand
All information & tips to prepare your trip in Thailand
Chiang Mai Railway Station is the terminus of the Northern Line. While there are many plans to extend the railways in Thailand and to neighboring countries, none plan to continue beyond Chiang Mai. The railway line projects to Laos and then China, pass through Nong Khai or even Chiang Rai (in the pipeline).
The ticket offices are located in the station hall as soon as you enter on the right. While for most day trains, you can buy your train tickets just before leaving (especially on normal trains in 3rd class), for night trains, it is strongly recommended, if not almost essential, to book your tickets in advance. On the full journey to Bangkok, sales are officially open 180 days in advance and on the big weekends of New Year's Eve and Songkran, berths sell out very quickly. For more normal days, it is still recommended to book as early as possible. This is possible via the official website or via this great Thailand transport booking website: 12go.asia
There is a luggage storage service at Chiang Mai train station, it is located on the right in the main hall as you enter.
In the train station parking lot, you will find taxis, tuk-tuks and red songthaews (shared taxis) to take you anywhere in the city. There is also one of the new bus lines that has a stop nearby.
Chiang Mai Train Station is located about 3km east of the city centre. To get there from the old city, you can take a taxi, a tuk-tuk or a songthaew (the shared red vans). Tuk-tuks are readily available around the city, but it is advisable to negotiate the price before getting in.
Alternatively, the green line (24C) of Chiang Mai buses serves the station. But allow plenty of time as the wait between 2 buses is quite long.
