Big arthquake in Thailand yesterday
Last night at 6:08 pm local time, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck to the north of Chiang Rai province. The earthquake was detected at a depth of 7.4 km in the district of Mae Lao . The tremor was felt in many provinces of the north. Apparently, there is only material damage .
The earthquake resulted from the fault of Payao. It affected buildings, roads, power sources and communication systems within 24 km. There are cracks on the road between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. The ceiling tiles in Chiang Rai airport have fallen, passengers ran out of the terminal to avoid being injured. The airport suspended its activity to inspect the runaway. The earthquake caused numerous power cuts especially in the district of Phan . Users have shared on social networks images with gutted roads, cracks in the walls of buildings and hotels, Buddha statues decapitated … Nine provinces have so far felt the tremors: Chiang Rai , Lampang , Lamphun , Bangkok , Chiang Mai, Nan , Phayao, Nong Khai and Loei. Some people on the heights of Bangkok also felt the quake according to some sources.
Yesterday evening authorities have warned against aftershocks. There have been more than 100 aftershocks and 5 of them had a magnitude of 5.0 to 5.9 on the Richter scale. Residents within 150 km of the epicenter were asked to be vigilant for the next twelve hours, the earthquake is still generating at least four shock waves per hour. According to a seismologist , it is the most powerful earthquake to hit the country recently . The authorities are now assessing the damage. Thailand is not based on a major fault line of continental shelves, it rarely experiencing strong earthquakes.
