An interim government will be formed in time to administer the state budget for the 2015 fiscal year (so at least in October), but elections are 15 months away said the general in a television speech. He also asked Thai people and international community to be comprehensive. He needs to reform the country before returning it to a government elected “in terms that everyone can accept .”

In the first phase, which should take two or three months, the focus will be on security and national reconciliation. In the second phase, which should take about a year, legal experts will draft a temporary constitution. A national assembly will be set up and choose a Prime Minister (non- elected).

“We believe that people will choose our kingdom rather than imperfect democratic system,” said Prayuth. “I’m not doing this for myself. We understand what foreigners think but we need time to adjust before we can all live happily together.”

He also promised to end martial law quickly and lift the curfew in some touristic areas affected by a decline in the number of visitors.
