Bangkok: the life of a boat family in 1970
Also called “Venice of Asia” because of its small canals (the klongs) running through the city, Bangkok has always been a place where water has a great importance. The activity on the river and canals was still very intense a few decades ago as you can see in this short film of 1970.
Bangkok is crossed by the Chao Phraya River which divides the city in two parts. On the right bank, more traditional, there are many khlongs. Before the development of roads and the hegemony of cars and tuk-tuks, they were the main circulation ways in the Thai capital. Activity there was very significant.
Since then many cars appeared in the streets making Bangkok one of the cities with the worst trafic jam in the world. Still some evidence of that old time remain: the floating markets.
