Wat Phothisomphon is probably the most important temple in Udon Thani city and famous for its teachings, especially on meditation. The main element of this Buddhist complex under royal patronage is the Phra Borommathat Thamma Chedi, a pagoda built on the occasion of the 80th birthday of King Rama IX. It contains relics of Lord Buddha, the Tripitaka bringing together His teachings and sacred objects. Its interior is adorned with beautiful contemporary murals. The top floor dedicated to Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, is probably the most beautiful. There are two notable Buddha images at Wat Phothisomphon. One 600-year-old one named Phra Phuttha Ratsami in the ordination hall and the 1,300-year-old Lopburi-style laterite one at the back of the ordination hall . You will also find a Bodhi tree brought from Sri Lanka and a 200 years old replica of Buddha's footprints in the mondop north from the ordination hall.
