Information about Jour de Vesak dans le parc historique de Sukhothai

Visakha Bucha (or Vesak) is one of the four most important Buddhist festivals of the year. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha. It is an occasion for Buddhists to gather in temples to pray, meditate and make offerings. The most significant event takes place at nightfall, with candlelight ceremonies in the temples. Visakha Bucha is celebrated throughout Thailand and of course also in Suhothai but normally in the active temples of the city.

Nevertheless since 2022, there are Visakha Bucha evenings open to all even foreigners at Wat Mahathat inside Sukhothai historical park. People gather and pray then go in a walking procession around the temple with their candles in a pottery holder (you can buy them on site) for 3 loops. I did it in 2022, it really is a unique setting for this ceremony. There was also a small market with food stalls. Sukhothai historical park has free entrance for the occasion (from 6 p.m.).

Be careful, sometimes, due to coincidence with the dates of the mini sound and light shows, the ceremony may be moved to another temple (probably Wat Chang Lom behind the Legendha Sukhothai hotel).
