Information about Songkran, Thai New Year

In mid-April, a few days around the 15, Thais celebrate their own New Year called Songkran. It is only in Theravada Buddhism based on the lunar calendar. Dates should be fluctuating but for convenience, Songkran is now celebrated every year from 13 April to 15 April (it still fluctuates a little or lasts longer depending on the region). In some cities such as Pattaya, Songkran Festival, can last up to a week.
Traditionally, people return to their families and pay respect to the elders by pouring a little scented water on their hands. This is also the opportunity of huge water fights in the street. A fun and festive tradition that requires to be properly prepared and protect all your personnal stuffs from water when you go out.
In Bangkok, the largest water fights are at Khao San Road and Silom Road.
