Is Koh Tao Island dangerous ?

The reputation of Koh Tao island in the Gulf of Thailand is very undermined in recent months because of the multiplication of suspicious deaths or assassinations of foreign tourists. Since last September, two British tourists murdered, a French tourist whose suicide is highly questionable (how did he managed to hang himslef with both hands tied behind his back), no news for almost 3 weeks from a French tourist , a British woman found a dead of natural causes this time has apparently according to official sources (alcohol mixed with valium) and another British disappeared since December 22, we just learn about it, her last contact with family was made from Koh Tao.

Pier Koh Tao
There was a serie of tourists deaths and disparitions in Koh Tao island

On pictures Koh Tao it is sandy beaches, turquoise waters, palm trees but the island known as the main diving destination in Thailand is a the headlines of the news for several months in and not for good reasons.

And even if the cause of death of the British found in Koh Tao a few days ago seem to be natural (the last report said they found alcohol mixed with valium in her blood), all this events are a little too much for such a small island even if it’s one with a very  important tourist density . 4 people dead, including at least three that were killed and two poeple disappearing in only 5 months is not very reassuring. The question of avoiding or not avoiding  Koh Tao, may be asked.

Even before without those cases, we already advised people to rather choose other islands than Koh Tao whose charm is sadly quickly damaged be the tourist overpopulation in Mae Haad and Sairee Beach. Or at least to choose the other parts of the island which are more peaceful because less easy to reach.

No doubt Koh Tao which was part of the last TripAdvisor’s Top 10 best islands in World will lose its position, at least temporarily. Even if there is no need to overract, we remind you that islands with white sand beaches and turquoisewaters are numerous in Thailand. So the choice is yours: Koh Tao or not Koh Tao, that is the question….
